Danieli & C. Officine Meccaniche SPA

Danieli & C.Officine Meccaniche SPA, a world’s leader in the iron & steel plant production, asked for our consultancy in order to create a simulation tool able to reproduce virtually a casting machine. In this way, they could test the whole casting process in a virtual environment, before than building the plant.

The Customer

  • Danieli & C.Officine Meccaniche SpA
  • World leader in the production of steel mill plants
  • Location: Buttrio (UD)

Intervention area

Design and production of steel plants all over the world - Simulation of steel production initial processes (scrap yard and steel mill) to verify the project productiveness and bottlenecks

DANIELI Plant Simulation standard to build and analyze simulation models lacks of the last part of the process: the continuous casting machine (CCM), where the steel sets.

Case study: Continuous Casting Machine and Transportation Equipment Libraries creation

SimTec task is creating a software library able to simulate the continuous casting process with the following characteristics:

  • The modeling of CCM and all the elements taking part to the continuous casting process is made possible and easy to perform
  • The tool will be user friendly so that it can be used by no expert people
  • The tool follows DANIELI standard for Plant Simulation modeling, and it can be adapted to the existent library

Software: Tecnomatix Plant Simulation 12.2

The modeling of the continuous casting process involves the management of material in the liquid state evolving into solid. To simplify the product transformation during the simulation analysis, SimTec decided to make "discrete" the molten metal through physical approximation of steel casting, from the very beginning of its solidification process.

Results

A complete Plant Simulation library is available to test new steel mill plant projects. It includes CCM, mould parking and transportation and discharge systems. In this way experts are able to test plant layouts from all point of view, increasing projects reliability.
